Review: Pirates on Robertson Quay (Bar Restaurant)

Decided to look up deals website when choosing a place for a dinner gathering with Bestie Fel and came across this:
http://www.deal.com.sg/deals/singapore/Ala-Carte-Dinner-Buffet-at-Pirates-on-Robertson-Quay-Includes-Appetizers-Signature-Mains-Pizzas-N-Pastas

Was thrilled by the Pirates themed restaurants (we are suckers for anything themed!!)

Here are some reviews:

Forget about the theme. Apart from the so-so nautical decor of the place, nothing else is ‘piracy’ at all! I mean when you have a themed restaurant, the least you can do is dress up ur staff, and make them scream ‘Ay Ay Captain’ every now and then.. If anything, the clean and polite staff all look like they can wait at posh restaurants..

Service is generally quite pleasant; from the exception they grant us during reservation (deal states that at least 2 days advance reservation required but they kindly allowed us to come in that night straight after we bought the coupons. Maybe coz it’s a Monday, and the bar is really really empty, but nonetheless, appreciate that very much). Mr Lim and me reached first after a uber long walk from Clark Quay stn and is desperate for a drink and seat. The friendly lady host showed us to the table first, and even offer to get us some appetizers first while waiting! Very caring of her! After which, we topped up $5.90 for bottomless soft drinks (no alcohol for me coz next day is working day! Boohoo!) Refills were prompt and the group of waiters took care of us pretty well throughout the evening.

Food comes in 1/3 size, good for small eaters to try more items but for you big boys like me, we prob have to order 2 of everything! Haha.. Quality and taste wise was actually quite wonderful! Never knew pirates eat that well! Dishes worth mentioning are the: Calamari (Fresh and QQ- foodmented by Prof Lee), Linguine Al Granchio (with chunks of real crabmeat), Polle de Pomodorini (LOVE the creamy tomato base, and al dente pasta), salmon (a tad overcooked but who dun love salmon? Ok, Mr Lim dun, but each is a generous thick fillet of salmon and if you can stomach 5, you get back more than the worth of your $$ paid already!), Cabonara (very sinful, very thick, very yumz!!!), Meatlover/ Crab pizza (thin, handmade crust and fresh from the oven).

Overall
Theme: 2/5
Food: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Price: 3/5

Will I come back again? Maybe, but only if they have this offer again.. Damage per pax is $19.90 + $5.90 (drinks)= $25.80. Not very cheap for a small menu, but not expensive too with the good food quality and its eat-all-you-can. Come on Fridays/ Weekends so you can wash the delish food with a mug or 2 of beer and chill the night away.. Oh, and it is one rare joint that dun charge gst nor service charge! So so rem to tip if you enjoyed yourself! ~Peace out~

Chef Arty’s Lazy No-Bake Chocolate Pie, Durian Pengat on a Rainy Sunday…

What do you do with:

1) Excess 70% Cocoa Lindt chocolates from the crazy sale at Value Dollar Shop;

20121127-095000.jpg

2) Cheap but badly chosen, Not-So-Nice + under-ripe batch of Durian from the Pasar Malam;

3) Rainy Sunday that got you trapped at home? (This picture was taken at KSL hotel lobby and not my home by the way! Lolx!)

20121127-095023.jpg

Yup, u got it!

1) Traditional No-Bake Chocolate Pie

2) Durian Pengat

Okie, if at this point, you are looking for a proper recipe, you are outta luck.. Coz am quite random when it comes to cooking.. That is why I can never bake a cake that requires precise measurements.. Cooking should be FUN and I love going with my gut, tongue and preference.. So if you are like me, you may use the following ingredients to make the simple, sinful and über delicious desserts! Let me know how yours turn out! =D

No-Bake Chocolate Pie

20121127-095037.jpg
Crust:
Crushed digestive biscuits
Sugar
Melted butter

Combine all of them together (with hands) and press into shape into your preferred pie tray/ bowl.
Set in fridge for 1hr. Mine actually didn’t turn out too well and crumbles too easily. Think I added too little melted butter.

Chocolate Filling:
Melted chocolate
Cooking Cream
Sugar
Whipped Cream (Gotta take note here: Whipped till peak is formed. Underwhip and ur filling will be too watery, over and the cream will collapse)

Cook melted chocolate, sugar and cream together and bring to a soft boil.
Fold in whipped cream into the slightly cooled mixture.
Pour into crust.
Set in fridge for a further 2hrs, or till you are ready to eat.

Durian Pengat

What you will need:
Durian
Cooking Cream (recommend using coconut cream. I used only cooking cream coz there were leftover from the chocolate pie)

Sugar (plenty)
Gula Melacca (very impt especially if you are not using coconut cream)
Pinch of salt

Boil durian and cream in slow fire. Add sugar and gula malacca. Cook till sugar melted and you get a mash-like consistency. Stir in a pinch of salt. Set aside pot to cool before putting in fridge for further 2-3hrs. Best served chilled. If you have some whipped cream, you can also garnish the dessert with little cream thorns like what I did!

*Tips on where to buy the best and cheapest ingredients:

Value Dollar Shop
Chocolate
Digestive Biscuits

Phoon Huat aka Red Man
Butter
Cooking Cream
Whipped Cream

Kudos to Javier, Shaney, Tiger, Serene, Molemole, and of course my partner SBG! I am so proud of you guys! Thank you for making my job so much simpler! And of course, the success goes to everyone who had worked really hard for this massive event together! Good work Sparky as the overall IC! =)

Happy 44th Birthday Singapore! Nope, no NDP tickets this yr, but we had a blast anyway! Got some of my closest friends with me to put up a potluck picnic to celebrate Singapore’s birthday together!
Was at Esplanade since 1.45pm to CHOP good place with Mr Lim and ZaiZai… Sun was blazing hot but the spirit of National Day in the air is everything I need to keep me going!
Terri, Don, Siti, Abang (Iman), and GB join us subsequently and while waiting for the parade to start, we started to go old school with games such as Old Maid, Donkey, Snap and Happy Family! We also had a great round of Taboo!
We also had a BIG Yam Seng with Vitasoy (that sent everyone around us STARING our way)!
Oh, and did I mention that I am the one that made (the icing) and decorated the gorgeous birthday cakes for Singapore’s 44th Birthday? Haha… That is the next best thing to the fireworks that night!
I love you Singapore! Many happy returns!!! *MuackX*
Swensons Dessert Buffet
From Top, Left to Right:
  1. Mr Lim and Me with fondue.
  2. Princess and Me showing off our Sundae Creations.
  3. Dessert Galore! Great for my Sweet Tooth, Really bad for my Waistline…
  4. Me and my Sundae!
  5. Alex, Terri, Arty.
  6. Yum! Need I say more? =P

I so hate Princess for the emailer promotion coz I think my face look rounder than ever halfway through gorging on fondue, cakes, pies, cream puffs and ice cream!

Sometimes, I really wonder whether I get fat instantly! I was browsing through the pictures and realised that my face grew rounder and rounder by every picture I take! Those pics that you see above are of course the more “front” ones.. The ones that I took later really cannot be displayed…

But for the price that we paid, this is really a very good dessert buffet to try once in a lifetime! I prob will go back again, but it definitely wun be soon… And there must be the one-for-one promotion again coz I seriouly dun think one can eat 20++ bucks worth of desserts over there!

Will post the emailer in my next post for you to enjoy the promotion too! Just print it out (black and white or color, in any size) and bring it down with you to the Swensons at Orchard Ion. Have fun! And if you get lost and need directions, just gimme a buzz! This outlet is particularly hard to find. We walked that level at least 3 rounds to find it!

Random Stuff In CRAZY Times

Amidst my crazy days now with projects. assignments, competitions, business plans (MULTIPLE) all due, I did some pretty random stuff…

My new bed frame finally arrives after close to a month of waiting and months of sleeping with the mattress on the floor… (My last one broke and at first I tot it was quite ZEN to have the mattress on the floor.. Until I start to have backaches!)

The Hush Puppies Dreamlinen 420 Threadcount Bed Sheet (as shown in pic) that I SpeciaLLY got from Mustafa to “welcome” my new frame was really disappointing though… Totally overrated! I got even madder when the size dun even fit the super-single bed snugly! More like a sheet designed for a middle size btn Super single and Queen! It is a FITTED SHEET for goodness sake! Trust me to pay so much extra for the brand, tc and “Dreamlinen” range… It is seriously not much difference from the regulars.. Even my FAV Mickey sheet is more comfortable!! HaizKena cheated…

Got a craving for egg tarts the day before and decided to make some myself by following a Youtube video…

Quite simple to make actually! Especially with Chef Benny’s assistance. You can check it out from here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwHpzosMTpI

The custard taste great! The skin was quite tasteless though…

Dun have to follow the recipe exactly.. Let me know if anyone wanna make. I had modified the recipe and make another batch again yesterday. The skin taste way better! Yum!!

Oh, and the pink ones you see are Strawberry Egg Tarts! I just replaced regular milk with strawberry milk coz it was on sale… Heee… The results: Berry Yummy Pink Tarts!! =P

Finally got a whole new set of WHITE dishes that I wanted for the longest time from Ikea!
Decided to do a little fine-dining styled dinner for my family! Twee Bak was on offer that day at Giant and there you go: Crispy Pork on Bed of Rosti with Roasted Carrots.

And this is by far the most random thing I did! (23rd July 2009)

My Parents woke me up really early: 9.45am (Ok, not THAT early but I slept at 5am last night coz was trying to complete my project) to just to go Pulau Ubin!!!

My dad wanna visit the Tua Pek Gong temple there and thus, everyone who were at home were mobilised…

Not that I mind coz I love the great air and greeneries of Ubin, and I am actually quite keen to go back to the temple that we used to frequent back in my poly days… But I am simply TOOOOOOOO BUSY!! Ahhh… I need a break…. Desperately….

And over there, we went to another new temple that was introduced by my dad’s friend’s wife.. She claimed that the fortune teller there is like super “ZHUN” and asked us to go too!

Heee.. I am quite a sucker for fortune telling! Too bad I can’t remember my birth time.. So have to go another time…

I intend to go with fellow 同志s: Alex and Terri!

One nice thing about the place is that they dun overcharge, only $12 to 批八字(life analysis). And for those really poor folks who cannot even afford that amount but need guidance, they can pay any amount they can… Not forceful about the money at all.. That is a nice change to this ultra monetary society ehz?

Check out some of the pictures we took:

Raymond (My Second Bro) and Me. Trying to position to “make” our face smaller than each others’ in the picture! But being the owner of this blog, of course I choose the one that I am smaller in! Hahaha….

Raymond and Dad at the Jetty.

Mum and Dad at our Ubin Fav Haunt: Tua Pek Gong Temple

Me 自拍at the Tua Pek Gong Temple

Haha… Love this shot! Isn’t my Mummy Sooooooooo UBER CUTE!!!! Love her!!!!!

We were on our way to the new temple in the van… It’s min $5 per way. If more than 5 pax, its $1 per pax… Quite reasonably priced…

Heee… And how can I resist to use another great 自拍shot to end this blog? Nice right? =P

Alright… Back to work now!!! Aargh….

Science Centre with Princess and the Lovely Kids

Say Cheese! This very life-like T-Rex is now the greeting mascot of Science Centre.. Geez… Isn’t mascots supposed to be cute? This big guy is scary!!

My Dear Kids!! Aren’t they just adorable and model-lookin’?

Sushi Feast @ Downtown East!! All famished after a long day of fun at the Science Centre… *DrooLZ*

(PS: Thanks for the ride all the way across the island Felix!)

Princess Fel and Little Prince K.R.

Prince Arty and Little Princess Char

Spent a great day out with Princess, Charmaine and Keiren at the Science Centre. It had been ages since I’ve been there and this place never fails to amaze and educate me. Hmmm… I wonder why I complain when my teachers always brought us there when I was young. We also managed to catch the special Magic exhibition. Haaa… Those were the days man… I remembered when I was in secondary school, I used to “adopt” little chicks from them. I will call up and ask if there are any unwanted chicks from the hatchery exhibit (chicks hatch right in front of visitors in this hatchery dome). I have picked up about 6-8 chicks before from them! Haha… Thank you Science Centre!

Catch up from 2008… LOADS to CATCH UP!!!

I remembered screaming “Happy 2009!!” on my way to Genting and now is already 12 March 2009!! Almost felt that time had passed me by and left me behind… Alright, I shall be a good boi and continue my blog from here… Really dun wanna be Mr 3 Minutes (San Fen Zhong Re Du- As per Princess Fel) this time so that I will have my life to read after I grow old… Heee… And for thoes waiting, sorry for such a long wait! Hope you will happen to chance on the fact that I continued…. First, lets start off with my various gatherings and outings…. Sec Sch mates + Princess to JB Aeon JUSCO and the new TESCO (right beside Aeon) Finally a TESCO is up within convenient distance. The nearest TESCO that I used to go before this JB one would have to be Malacca. Being a grocery shopaholic, this hypermart is heaven to me! Check out our “suaku” pictures that screams to the whole world that “we are TOURISTS!!!”

1: Alex and Terri for sale! (been there for about 2 weeks liao! Any takers? 80%?) LOLX!! =P
2: I hate cha chan ting. Dun ask me why.. The rest love it so we went… Dun fancy the food at all but that dosent mean I can’t pose for the camera! Hee.. =)
3: A really cute GIANT Doremon is what it takes to expose our TOURIST identity! I cannot stand myself sometimes.. But what to do?? It is HUGE and ADORABLE!! Hahahaha…
4: Artistic picture taken by yours truly of the 2 gorgeous ladies in TESCO’s Kenny Rogers…
5: Dun look at our smiley faces. The food at their Kenny Rogers really quite CMI… Very different from Singapore’s yummy Kenny ROgers… Dunno why also… And its BAD across state… I tried some pretty yucky dishes at Kenny Rogers Genting too!! =X Service stuff were really nice there though! =)
6: Summer, Winter, Spring, Autumn, simply different sodas with a scoop of ice cream! Haha.. Clever way to market floats. Pretty for the camera too!
